When a radiation detection system sounds an alarm, every second matters.
Last month in Midland County, Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Radiological/Nuclear Threat Detection Unit responded to an alert that ultimately led to the recovery of a buried Cesium-137 (Cs-137) radioactive source.
Our SIGMA CBRNE sensor detection system helped support the mission by enabling the detection and identification of a radiological threat. After the initial alarm, DPS personnel conducted a systematic survey, coordinated with local, state and federal partners, and safely recovered the source from approximately 6–8 inches underground.
The recovered source was a 100-millicurie sealed Cs-137 source manufactured in 1967. Thanks to the coordinated response and continuous radiological monitoring, the operation concluded with no injuries, no personnel contamination and no threat to the public.
